Understanding Superannuation Investment Options in Australia: How to Choose the Right Strategy

By Roopon Team8 min read

How Super Investment Options Work

Every superannuation fund in Australia holds member contributions in an investment portfolio. Most funds offer multiple investment options - from very conservative (capital stable, cash) through to very aggressive (high growth, international shares). Members choose which option their contributions and existing balance are invested in. If you have never made an active choice, you are in the fund's default - usually a balanced or lifecycle option. That default may or may not be appropriate for your situation.

  • Pre-mixed options: The most common structure. The fund constructs a diversified portfolio across asset classes (Australian shares, international shares, property, infrastructure, fixed income, cash) and offers it as a single option with a label like 'Conservative', 'Balanced', 'Growth', or 'High Growth'. Members choose one pre-mixed option for their entire balance.
  • Single-asset class options: Many funds allow members to build their own allocation by selecting individual asset class options - e.g., 60% International Shares + 30% Australian Shares + 10% Fixed Income. This requires more active management and understanding of asset allocation.
  • Lifecycle (lifestage) options: Some funds (particularly MySuper default options) automatically shift the investment mix as you age - higher growth assets in younger years, progressively more conservative as retirement approaches. AustralianSuper's Balanced option and similar 'target date' approaches do this automatically.
  • Member Direct / SMSF-lite options: Some large funds (Australian Retirement Trust, AustralianSuper, Aware Super) offer 'member direct' investment platforms that allow members to hold ASX-listed shares, ETFs, and term deposits within their super - similar to a limited SMSF without the administration cost.
  • Switching options: Members can generally switch investment options at any time (some funds have switching windows). Switching does not trigger CGT within super (the 15% fund tax applies to gains within the fund, not to member-level switches). However, switching out of growth assets during a market decline locks in losses - a common and costly mistake.

Understanding Asset Classes and Risk

Different asset classes have different expected returns, volatility, and time horizons. Understanding these characteristics is essential for choosing an appropriate super investment option.

  • Australian shares: Ownership stakes in ASX-listed companies. Historically highest long-term return (approx 9–10% nominal per year over very long periods) but highest short-term volatility. Can fall 30–50% in bear markets. Appropriate for long-term super (10+ year horizon).
  • International shares: Same characteristics as Australian shares but spread across global markets - reducing single-country concentration risk. Australian super funds with international exposure benefit from currency diversification (though many hedge some FX risk). Returns broadly similar to Australian shares over long periods.
  • Property: Listed property trusts (A-REITs) or unlisted property funds holding commercial real estate (offices, retail, industrial). Income-focused, moderate capital growth. Relatively illiquid for unlisted property. AREIT values are affected by interest rates and COVID-era structural changes (office vacancy, retail evolution).
  • Infrastructure: Toll roads, airports, utilities, ports. Long-term contracts provide stable income streams. Relatively defensive - lower volatility than shares, higher return than bonds. Inflation-linked revenue common. Large funds (AustralianSuper, HESTA, REST) hold significant unlisted infrastructure positions.
  • Fixed income (bonds): Australian and international government and corporate bonds. Lower return than shares but significantly lower volatility. Provide defensive ballast during equity market downturns - bonds typically rise when equities fall. Appropriate for shorter horizons or capital preservation.
  • Cash: Term deposits, bank deposits. Lowest return (currently 4.5–5.0%) but no capital risk. Appropriate only for near-retirees drawing down imminently or as a short-term holding. Long-term cash holdings in super guarantee real return destruction after inflation.

Which Investment Option Is Right for You?

The appropriate super investment option depends primarily on your time horizon to retirement - not your emotional tolerance for seeing account balances fluctuate. Short-term market volatility is irrelevant if you will not access the money for 20 years.

  • Under 45, more than 20 years to retirement: High Growth or Growth option (90–100% growth assets). Long time horizon means short-term volatility is irrelevant - compound growth over 20+ years overwhelmingly dominates short-term fluctuations. Switching to Conservative because the market fell is one of the costliest retirement savings mistakes.
  • 45–55, 10–20 years to retirement: Growth option (70–85% growth assets). Still a long horizon but some de-risking begins to make sense - particularly in the 5 years before retirement when sequence of returns risk increases. Review allocation at 55.
  • 55–65, within 10 years of retirement: Balanced or Growth (50–75% growth assets). Balance between growth (still need 20–30 years of real returns post-retirement) and capital protection. This is where financial advice is most valuable - the optimal allocation depends heavily on your other assets, Age Pension entitlements, and retirement income needs.
  • In retirement (pension phase): Balanced or Conservative Balanced (40–60% growth assets). In pension phase, you are drawing down - but a 25–30 year retirement still requires growth assets to maintain purchasing power. A 100% conservative or cash allocation in retirement creates longevity risk. Most retirement income specialists recommend maintaining 40–60% growth assets through retirement.
  • Checking the YourSuper comparison tool: The ATO's YourSuper comparison tool at ato.gov.au allows comparison of MySuper products by net return after fees over 1, 3, 5, and 8 years. Compare your fund's default option against peers in the same category. Consistently underperforming funds are flagged by APRA's annual performance test.

Fees: The Silent Return Killer

Investment returns inside super are quoted before fees. After fees, the return available to members depends heavily on fund cost structures. Over a 30-year accumulation period, even a 0.5% fee difference compounding annually can reduce a final super balance by 10–15%.

  • Administration fees: Flat dollar fees per year ($50–$120) plus a percentage of balance (0.1–0.4%). Most industry funds have moved to flat-dollar administration fees above a minimum balance threshold.
  • Investment fees: Charged as a percentage of assets in each investment option. Passive index options within super: 0.05–0.15%. Actively managed growth options: 0.5–1.2%. Alternatives (infrastructure, private equity, hedge funds): 1.5–3.0%. Many industry funds blend active and passive management.
  • Performance fees: Some funds charge performance fees on options that outperform a benchmark - typically 10–15% of outperformance. APRA requires these to be clearly disclosed. Performance fees add cost in good years without always reflecting genuine skill.
  • Transaction costs: Brokerage and market impact costs of buying and selling within the fund's portfolio. Disclosed separately from the investment fee since 2022 ASIC disclosure reforms. High turnover (active) strategies have higher transaction costs than index strategies.
  • Total cost comparison: Add administration fee (percentage) + investment fee + transaction cost + performance fee to get the total cost ratio for your option. Compare this to the fund's net 10-year return (after all fees). A fund with higher fees but materially higher net returns may still be worth the cost - but most active management does not deliver net outperformance over 10+ year periods.

Practical Steps to Review Your Super Investment Option

Most Australians have never actively chosen their super investment option. These steps help you review and improve your current position.

  • Log in to myGov and check your super: Link your ATO account via myGov to see all super accounts, their balances, and which funds they are in. Consolidate multiple accounts - multiple funds mean multiple sets of insurance premiums and administration fees eroding your balance.
  • Find your current investment option: Log in to your super fund's member portal. Look for 'Investment Options' or 'How your super is invested'. Identify which option you are currently in and its asset allocation.
  • Compare returns on the YourSuper tool: Compare your fund's MySuper option against peers in the same risk category. APRA publishes performance data. Funds that fail the annual performance test are required to notify members.
  • Review your option against your time horizon: If you are 35 and in a Balanced option (60% growth assets), consider whether switching to High Growth (90% growth assets) is more appropriate for a 25-year horizon. Model the difference using your fund's projection calculator.
  • Make the switch online: Most super funds allow investment option switches through the member portal at no cost. The switch is effective typically within 2–5 business days. Do not switch during a market panic - switch based on strategic rationale, not market timing.
