15 Ways to Beat the Cost of Living in Australia in 2026

By ROOPON Team4 min read

Australia's cost of living has increased sharply across every major category. Rent is up. Groceries are up. Energy is up. Wages have moved, but not fast enough. Here are fifteen specific things you can do to reduce what you spend - starting this week.

Housing

1. Negotiate your rent at renewal. Vacancy rates have begun rising in some markets. If you have been a reliable tenant, you have more leverage than you think. Ask for a rent freeze or reduction at renewal. The worst outcome is a no.

2. Audit your utilities. Energy prices vary significantly between retailers. Use the government's Energy Made Easy comparison tool to check whether switching providers would save you money. Most households that do this find a better deal within twenty minutes.

3. Drop unused streaming and subscription services. The average Australian household pays for 4–5 streaming services. Most use two consistently. Cancel the others. This is the simplest $30–$60 saving most households have not yet made.

Groceries and food

4. Meal plan before you shop. A weekly meal plan before shopping typically cuts 15–20% off the grocery bill by eliminating impulse buys and mid-week top-up trips.

5. Switch commodity items to home brand. Flour, pasta, tinned tomatoes, rice, canned legumes - there is no quality difference. Switching these items alone saves $30–$50 per weekly shop.

6. Use Aldi for pantry staples. Aldi's pricing on staples is consistently lower than the major supermarkets. You do not need to shop there exclusively, but buying pantry items there adds up.

7. Reduce food waste. Australians throw away roughly $1,000 in food per year per household. Check the fridge before you shop, and cook to use rather than buy to replace.

Transport

8. Review your car insurance. Car insurance premiums have risen substantially. Get comparison quotes annually - loyalty to one insurer is rarely rewarded. Three quotes, twenty minutes.

9. Reduce discretionary driving. With fuel at current prices, combining errands into fewer trips makes a material difference. Plan your driving the same way you plan your shopping.

Subscriptions and services

10. Audit direct debits. Open your banking app and look at every direct debit from the past three months. Most people find at least one or two subscriptions they had forgotten about. Cancel anything you cannot name the value of immediately.

11. Switch to annual billing where you are committed. For services you genuinely use, annual billing is typically 15–20% cheaper than monthly. If you know you will keep it, pay annually.

Shopping and discretionary

12. Use exclusive discount codes before you buy. Before purchasing anything online, check whether an exclusive discount code is available. ROOPON membership gives Australians access to exclusive partner store discount codes - not the generic, already-expired codes that populate the first Google result. Members consistently save more per month than the membership costs.

13. Apply the 48-hour rule on discretionary purchases. Wait 48 hours before buying anything non-essential over $50. Most impulse purchases do not survive the wait.

Additional income

14. Enter legitimate prize draws. This is not a strategy to rely on, but it can sit alongside real savings work. ROOPON members receive FREE included prize-draw entries per their plan and published campaign terms. Extra packages exist for specific campaigns. Check roopon.com/giveaways.

15. Review your salary. If you have not had a salary review in twelve months, request one. In the current labour market, the ask is often met - or at minimum starts the conversation. The cost of living argument is legitimate and widely understood by employers right now.
