Why Comparing Super Funds Matters
Superannuation is most Australians' second-largest asset after their home - yet most people spend more time choosing a mobile phone plan than choosing their super fund. The difference between a top-performing and median-performing fund over 30 years is enormous: a $100,000 balance in a fund returning 8% per year grows to $1,006,000; the same balance in a fund returning 6.5% grows to $661,000. That $345,000 gap comes entirely from fund selection. APRA publishes annual performance data - underperforming funds are flagged, but members must act to move.
- APRA's annual performance test: Since 2021, APRA assesses MySuper products (the default investment option in industry and retail funds) against a benchmark. Funds that underperform the benchmark by more than 0.5% over eight years fail the test and must notify members. Members in a failed fund should treat this as a trigger to switch.
- The YourSuper comparison tool: The ATO's YourSuper tool at ato.gov.au allows comparison of all MySuper products by net return after fees over 1, 3, 5, and 8 years. It also shows the annual fee in dollars for a $50,000 balance. This is the most reliable, government-maintained starting point for comparison.
- Fee drag over time: A 0.5% annual fee difference on a $200,000 balance costs $1,000/year - $30,000 over 30 years, before the compounding effect of that lost money. Higher fees are only justified by consistently higher net returns. Most retail master trust funds charge higher fees than industry funds without delivering higher net returns over long periods.
- Insurance inside super - the switching trap: The most common reason people stay in poorly performing funds is fear of losing insurance. This is a legitimate concern but manageable - with the right approach to switching, insurance cover can be transferred or replaced without a gap.
- Consolidating multiple accounts: The average Australian has 2.3 super accounts. Each account charges administration fees and insurance premiums. Consolidating to one fund eliminates duplicate costs - the average saving from consolidation is $600–$1,400/year in fees alone.
What to Look For When Comparing Funds
Net investment return (return after all fees) is the primary criterion - but it must be assessed alongside risk, insurance quality, and member services. Here is a complete comparison framework.
- Net return over 10+ years: Short-term returns (1–3 years) reflect market conditions more than fund skill. Compare net returns over 8–10 years in the same investment category (Growth, Balanced, etc.). Use the YourSuper tool and the Rainmaker SuperRatings database for cross-fund comparison in the same risk category.
- Total annual fee as a percentage of balance: Add administration fee (percentage) + investment fee + transaction costs + any indirect cost ratio. For a $100,000 balance, the total fee should ideally be below 0.8% per year. Fees above 1.2% on a standard Growth option without exceptional performance are hard to justify.
- Insurance quality - not just insurance existence: Evaluate the type of cover (own vs any occupation TPD, death, income protection), automatic acceptance limits (how much you get without health assessment), and premium cost for your age. Some industry funds have significantly better automatic acceptance limits and occupation definitions than others.
- Investment option range: Does the fund offer the investment options you want - index options, ESG options, direct investment platforms? If you want to actively manage your super investments, a fund with Member Direct or similar is necessary.
- Administration quality: Online account management, app quality, responsiveness of call centres, and clarity of member statements all affect the practical experience. Check fund reviews on ProductReview.com.au and the Rainmaker fund ratings.
- Financial strength and trustee governance: Review the fund's annual report and trustee structure. Industry funds are run by boards with equal member and employer representation. Retail funds are typically run by for-profit financial institutions. APRA publishes trustee governance data.
Insurance: The Critical Step Before Switching
Insurance inside super is frequently the most valuable aspect of membership - and potentially the most at-risk during a switch. Getting this right protects you from gaps in cover that could be financially devastating.
- What you currently have: Log in to your current super fund and check your insurance summary - life cover amount, TPD cover amount, income protection cover amount, and premium cost. Note whether your TPD is 'own occupation' or 'any occupation' - this is the most important definition distinction.
- New fund automatic acceptance: Most super funds offer default insurance cover (death + TPD, sometimes income protection) without requiring a health declaration - up to an automatic acceptance limit. Check the new fund's automatic acceptance limit before switching. If your required cover is within the limit, you can transfer without health assessment.
- Pre-existing condition risk: If you switch and need to apply for insurance above the automatic acceptance limit, the new fund will assess your health. Pre-existing conditions may be excluded or result in declined cover. If you have a pre-existing condition, establish insurance in the new fund (up to automatic acceptance limits) before cancelling the old fund.
- Concurrent membership during transition: Do not cancel your old fund until insurance is confirmed in the new fund. You can be a member of multiple super funds simultaneously. Transfer the balance only after verifying your insurance position in the new fund.
- 'Active employment' clause: Many super fund insurance policies include a clause requiring you to be 'actively at work' (or in active employment) on the date cover commences. If you are on sick leave, parental leave, or reduced-hours leave when you switch, your new fund's insurance may not be active. Check the policy terms before switching.
- Income protection inside super - own occupation: Own-occupation income protection is not available inside super (regulatory change from April 2020). All income protection inside super is 'any occupation' or similar. If you hold own-occupation income protection through your current fund (legacy policies grandfathered before 2020), switching funds would lose this superior definition permanently.
How to Switch: Step-by-Step
Switching super funds is straightforward once the insurance analysis is complete. The process can be done entirely online through myGov in most cases.
- Step 1 - Research and select the new fund: Use YourSuper, Rainmaker, and the new fund's product disclosure statement (PDS) to confirm it meets your criteria. Read the PDS for the investment option and insurance product you plan to use.
- Step 2 - Open the new fund account: Most super funds allow online account opening in under 10 minutes. You will need your TFN, address, and banking details. Do not roll over your existing balance yet.
- Step 3 - Confirm insurance in the new fund: Once your account is open, check that default insurance cover has activated (usually within 30 days of employment-based contributions or at account opening for some funds). Confirm the cover type, amount, and any conditions that apply.
- Step 4 - Notify your employer: Complete a Standard Choice Form (downloadable from the ATO website or your new fund) and provide it to your payroll department. Your employer must implement your fund choice within two months. From that date, new SG contributions go to your new fund.
- Step 5 - Roll over the old balance: Use myGov (linked to ATO) to initiate a rollover of your old fund balance to the new fund. This is the most common method. Alternatively, use the new fund's rollover request form. The rollover typically takes 3–5 business days. Check that the full balance arrives - including any insurance premiums or exit fees deducted.
- Step 6 - Confirm old account closure: Once the balance has transferred, confirm the old account has been closed (or close it if it remains open with zero balance). An open zero-balance account may still attract administration fees in some funds - always confirm closure in writing.
Special Situations
Some circumstances require extra care when switching super funds.
- Defined benefit funds: If you are in a public sector defined benefit scheme (state government, universities, some large employers), the switch calculation is completely different. Defined benefit entitlements are based on years of service and final salary - they cannot be directly compared to accumulation balances. Get specific advice before leaving a defined benefit scheme.
- Employer default fund requirements: Some enterprise agreements or employment contracts specify a particular super fund. Check your EA before switching - in some cases the employer is permitted to direct contributions to a specific fund. Award-based super fund requirements also apply in some industries.
- SMSF to APRA-regulated fund: Rolling money out of an SMSF into an industry or retail fund requires the SMSF to pay out a benefit. Ensure any LRBA (if property is held) is settled and fund assets are liquid before initiating the rollover. The SMSF must also lodge final tax returns and wind up formally with the ATO.
- Stapling: From 1 November 2021, if you start a new job and do not nominate a super fund, your employer must contribute to your 'stapled' fund - the existing fund you already have (identified by the ATO). This prevents the creation of new default accounts. You can still actively choose a different fund by providing a Standard Choice Form.
