Australian Robo-Advisers and Micro-Investing Apps Compared

By Roopon Team6 min read

What Are Robo-Advisers and Micro-Investing Apps?

Robo-advisers and micro-investing apps are digital platforms that automate investment management with minimal human involvement. They lower the barriers to investing - removing the need for large minimum investments, stock-picking knowledge, or ongoing portfolio rebalancing. In Australia, these platforms are regulated by ASIC and must hold an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL).

  • Robo-advisers (automated advice): Platforms like Stockspot and InvestSMART ask about your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon, then allocate your money across a portfolio of ETFs. They rebalance automatically and some provide limited personal financial advice within their digital framework. Higher minimum balances, more sophisticated strategies.
  • Micro-investing apps: Platforms like Raiz and Spaceship focus on removing friction entirely - small, frequent contributions (round-ups, recurring transfers) into a pre-selected portfolio. Very low minimums (some start from $5). Less customisable but excellent for building the savings habit.
  • How they make money: Management fees (percentage of assets under management), flat monthly fees, or a combination. Understanding the full fee structure - not just the headline rate - is essential for evaluating value.
  • Regulatory status: All legitimate Australian platforms hold an AFSL and are required to act in clients' best interests. Verify AFSL status on ASIC Connect before depositing. Platforms operating without an AFSL are operating illegally.

Raiz (formerly Acorns Australia)

Raiz is one of Australia's largest micro-investing platforms by user count - launched in 2016, it popularised the round-up investing concept where spare change from everyday purchases is automatically invested.

  • How it works: Link your bank accounts and/or cards. Raiz rounds up transactions to the nearest dollar and sweeps the difference into your investment account. You can also set recurring investments (weekly, recurring, monthly) or make lump-sum contributions. Investments are made in a portfolio of ETFs chosen at setup based on your risk profile.
  • Portfolios: Six risk-based portfolios from Conservative to Aggressive, plus an Emerald (ethical) portfolio and a Sapphire (Bitcoin-inclusive) portfolio. Underlying holdings include Vanguard and iShares ETFs across Australian shares, international shares, fixed income, property, and cash.
  • Fees: $3.50/month for balances under $20,000. $4.50/month for the Sapphire portfolio. 0.275%/year for balances over $20,000. IMPORTANT: $3.50/month on a $1,000 balance is an effective annual fee of 4.2% - extremely expensive compared to direct ETF investing. Raiz becomes more cost-competitive only at balances above approximately $15,000–$20,000.
  • Super option: Raiz Super is available - superannuation account managed by Raiz. Higher fees than most industry super funds; suitable only for very small balances or members who prioritise the integrated app experience over cost.
  • Best for: Absolute beginners who want to start with tiny amounts and need the gamification/round-up feature to build the habit. Not suitable as a primary investment vehicle for growing balances.

Spaceship and Pearler

Spaceship and Pearler take different approaches - Spaceship focuses on thematic portfolios (tech-heavy), while Pearler is built explicitly for long-term index investors with autoinvest and community features.

  • Spaceship: Three portfolios - Universe (global companies 'of the future', heavy US tech weighting), Earth (ESG-focused), and Index (traditional broad market). No management fee for balances under $5,000. 0.10%/year (Universe/Earth) or 0.05%/year (Index) above $5,000 - among the lowest fees in the micro-investing space. CHESS-sponsored for Australian holdings. US tech-heavy portfolios have delivered strong recent returns but carry significant concentration risk.
  • Spaceship risk note: The Universe portfolio's heavy weighting to US technology stocks (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta) means it is not diversified - it has outperformed in rising tech markets but fell sharply in the 2022 growth-stock selloff. Understand what you own before investing.
  • Pearler: Explicitly designed for long-term buy-and-hold index investors. $6.50 per ASX trade brokerage. CHESS-sponsored. Autoinvest feature allows scheduled purchases into nominated ETFs - removing market-timing temptation. Community features let users share (anonymously or named) their ETF portfolios and investment philosophies. No monthly flat fee - you only pay when you trade.
  • Pearler best for: Regular investors building a diversified ETF portfolio over the long term. The autoinvest feature and community focus make it particularly good for investors who want accountability and simplicity without paying a management fee on their growing balance.
  • Spaceship best for: Young investors wanting very low or zero fees on small balances with a simple app experience. The Index portfolio is the most defensible long-term choice within Spaceship's offering.

Stockspot and InvestSMART

Stockspot and InvestSMART are Australia's two main genuine robo-advisers - they build and manage diversified ETF portfolios tailored to your risk profile, with automatic rebalancing.

  • Stockspot: Australia's oldest robo-adviser (founded 2013). Five risk-based portfolios (Topaz to Ruby) built from 5–6 ETFs covering Australian shares, international shares, emerging markets, fixed income, gold, and cash. Automatic rebalancing when portfolio drifts beyond tolerance bands. CHESS-sponsored. Fees: 0.66%/year for balances under $10,000; 0.55% for $10,000–$50,000; scaling down to 0.33% above $200,000. Minimum investment: $2,000. Tax optimisation features (specific parcel identification, tax-loss harvesting alerts).
  • InvestSMART: Owned by InvestSMART Group (ASX: INV). Portfolios built from Vanguard and iShares ETFs. Three approaches: Capped Fee ($550/year maximum regardless of balance - very attractive for larger balances), Balanced, and Ethical. The Capped Fee portfolio is InvestSMART's unique proposition - at $550/year, a $500,000 balance pays an effective fee of just 0.11%/year, undercutting most competitors at scale. Minimum $10,000.
  • Stockspot vs InvestSMART: For balances under $50,000, Stockspot's percentage fees are competitive. For balances above $100,000+, InvestSMART's $550 cap becomes extremely competitive. Both provide automatic rebalancing and are appropriate for investors who want a 'set and forget' managed portfolio without the cost and complexity of a full financial adviser.
  • What robo-advisers do NOT do: They do not provide personal financial advice on tax planning, insurance, estate planning, superannuation strategy, property, or debt management. They manage an investment portfolio - nothing more. Do not mistake portfolio management for comprehensive financial planning.
  • The core argument for direct ETFs: A self-directed investor buying VGS + A200 directly through Pearler or Selfwealth pays 0.18% + 0.07% = weighted average ~0.13% MER (no additional advisory fee). A Stockspot portfolio at 0.55% MER + underlying ETF fees totals approximately 0.75–0.85% all-in. Over 20 years on a $100,000 portfolio, the fee difference compounds significantly. The robo-adviser adds value through automatic rebalancing and behavioural guardrails - whether that is worth 0.5–0.6%/year extra depends on the investor.
